Morgan County / Decatur Farmers Market
Located in downtown Decatur, the Farmers Market has provided an outlet for providing fresh, locally grown produce and meat since 1937. The voluminous timber-framed open-air pavilion will replace a pre-engineered metal structure to create an impressive anchor to the downtown gateway and increase visibility from the adjacent overpass. First Avenue modifications will promote on-street parking, pedestrian circulation, and help define the market entrance.
Adding to the momentum of Decatur’s urban renewal, the market will feature large pedestrian plazas, a ‘front porch’ and a multi-purpose activity lawn for hosting community events and gatherings.
Awards
The Morgan County / Decatur Farmer’s Market was recognized with the 2025 Honor Award by the North Alabama Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The jury described the project as “a beautifully articulated civic space,” praising its transformation of a simple market typology into a vibrant community hub. Every detail, from the material selection to the elegant structure, was noted for supporting both form and function. Even utilitarian spaces, like restrooms, received thoughtful design attention. With strong connections to its neighborhood context, the market is both grounded and aspirational—a true landmark for the city of Decatur.
